The CF Foundation recently provided an update on the following research trial.

Staphylococcus (Staph) aureus small-colony variants

This trial will look at CF respiratory cultures to identify types of the germ Staph aureus that are slow growing and antibiotic-resistant called small colony variants (SCVs). These types of Staph aureus are not often looked for in routine culture testing. Respiratory cultures will be tested using special laboratory methods to see how common these types of germs are and if they are linked to lower lung function. This study will last two years and will collect samples of mucus from study participants.
