Last month, CFFC started publishing tidbits of information about CF and CFFC on its Facebook page with historical information is posted on “Throwback Thursdays” (TBT) and Monday posts under the heading “Did You Know” (DYK). Here are the post for August.

  1. August 3rd: DYK – DNA testing for CF analyzes the blood for the most common mutations such as ΔF508 (most commercially available tests look for 32 or fewer different mutations); therefore, a negative screen does not guarantee that a child will not have CF.
  2. August 6th: TBT – CFFC’s first sports-based fund raiser was the 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament in Memory of Peter Lunn held on March 24, 2012.
  3. August 10th: DYK – CFFC’s next fund raising event is the Living with CF Golf Tournament on September 12, 2015 at Southern Meadows Golf Club. Check out the event page.
  4. August 13th: TBT – Mist tents were developed in the 1960’s on the theory that sleeping in a vapor-rich atmosphere would loosen the mucus in the lungs. The practice was largely abandoned by the 1980’s.
  5. August 17th: DYK – For many, daily CF treatments include inhaled medications (antibiotics, mucolytics to thin mucus and/or bronchodilators) delivered via a nebulizer.
  6. August 20th: TBT – The IRS determination of CFFC’s 501(c)(3) charitable status was effective August 31, 1993.
  7. August 24th: DYK – All direct contributions to CFFC are tax deductible; however, the tax deductible portion for the golf tournament is the net of the entry fee less the value of services received (greens fees and lunch).  Also, contributions through third-party programs (like Amazon Smile and the Moe’s fund raiser) are deductions for the third-party sponsor not the purchaser.
  8. August 27th: TBT – Research that lead to enteric coating for oral medications was funded by Oscar Meyer in response to new food processing techniques that dramatically reduced the availability of pancreatic enzymes.
  9. August 31st: DYK – According to CFF, 87% of people living with CF take pancreatic enzyme supplements.
